ROCKY MOUNT, VA -

UPDATE: 6:00 p.m.

It's a scheme to buy and re-sell guns to other people that has one Rocky Mount police officer and Bassett gun store owner indicted on federal charges.

We've found there was an existing relationship between Slate and Haskins. According to several sources, Slate is dating Haskins' daughter.

Rocky Mount Police Chief says this kind of came as a shock. He says Slate was a good police officer and started working for him in May of 2012.

The chief says ATF agents did ask to interview four or five rocky mount police officers about three or four months ago, but he was unaware of what it was about.

In response to what will happen with Slate's employement. He says it's policy to suspend an officer without pay if charged with a felony.

The grand jury charged David Haskins, the owner of Southern Guns in Henry County with 18 counts of making false statements to a licensed firearms dealer in relation to the purchase of a firearm.

Slate faces a federal conspiracy charge to make straw purchases of firearms.

Federal investigators believe Haskins recruited slate to help then recruit other people including police officers to help buy the weapons.

Haskins would say the guns were for him, but were actually getting it for someone else or reselling for purchase. Some of the guns were high powered Smith and Wesson Rifles.
