Pack the Bus School Supplies Drive in its 14th Year

Posted: Updated:

It's almost time for kids to head to back to school, but hundreds upon hundreds of them will return to their classrooms without the supplies they need.

Starting today, you can help a local radio station make sure they have pencils, paper, and, most importantly, self-esteem as they start the new year.

For the next five days the folks at Q99 are asking for your help to pack school buses full of supplies for hundreds of kids who otherwise wouldn't have them.

Starting later this morning, Breakfast Club hosts Dick Daniels and Dave Page will roll into different Walmart locations with empty school buses.

They're encouraging folks to pick up a few school supplies while they're shopping in the stores, and then drop them off at the buses as they head out.

Each drive location will have a school bus from that specific area's school division to make sure that all the supplies collected will stay in the communities where they were donated.

For example, the buses that will be outside the Walmart in Wytheville today are from Wythe and Bland County public schools.

Since the drive first began, more than $493,000 worth of supplies have found their way into the hands of local kids in need.

Dick and Dave are hoping for another strong showing this year, and they say you'll be helping out more than just the students.

"We hear from the teachers who have said in the past a lot of it is out-of-pocket expenses for them," Page said. "They'll see Johnny doesn't have pencils and paper and whatnot so they'll go to Walmart and they'll buy the stuff and come back. So it's nice we've been able to fill a gap for teachers as well."

In all, the Pack the Bus drive will benefit students in 23 different school divisions.
