Interstate 81 delays for new blasts scheduled

Posted: Updated:
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, VA -

Over the past two months Virginia Department of Transportation crews say they've noticed the crack on Christiansburg Mountain along Interstate 81 has been growing. Spokesperson, Jason Bond says crews believe that a slab of rock underneath the crack is all that's stopping it from turning into a landslide.

Starting Wednesday, blasting will being on the mountain to clear the dangerous area, and with many cars driving through each day, it's guaranteed to slow traffic down.

Bond says during the blastings there will be a rolling road block, meaning police will gradually slow traffic to a stop at mile markers 114 northbound and 128 southbound. The entrance ramps to the interstate at mile marker 118 will also be shut down. The Seneca Hollow Rd bridge will be closed as well.

Because of the cleanup that needs to be done after each blasting, it will be hard to predict specific times and days that the blastings will happen after the first one at 10:30 on Wednesday.
