Moms-to-be Learn to Shop Healthy

Posted: Updated:

Roanoke moms-to-be learned how to eat healthy during their pregnancy Tuesday during a special shopping seminar at Kroger near Tanglewood Mall.

The seminar was organized by the Baby Basics Moms Club.

The club was formed out of a partnership between the Southwest Virginia Prenatal Conference and the What to Expect Foundation (founded by the author of the popular book "What to Expect When You Are Expecting").

The group helps women learn how to be healthy during pregnancy and how to navigate the healthcare field.

Organizer Jeanette O'Neill says, most importantly, the group focuses on strengthening women from the inside out.

"[We] help them feel valued and more confident in their abilities to be a good mother."

The skills of how to shop for nutritious food on a budget can be difficult, so the group toured the women around the grocery store along with a representative from Kroger, who gave the pregnant women and their guests a $50 gift certificate to help them put the tips to good use.

O'Neill says that shopping is a learned habit.

"If you think about it, how do you learn how to shop for groceries? From your mom, most likely," O'Neil said. "So if we can teach the value in shopping on the outside walls of the store (where the healthy foods are) and to avoid the inner isles (cookies, non-healthy food for moms and kids), then we can not only positively impact a woman's health and her pregnancy, but we could potentially affect how her next generation shops for food. This is a powerful way to impact the health of women and their children."
