Virginia Tech Conference Focuses on Hiring Veterans

Posted: Updated:

Business owners will meet in Blacksburg today to focus on hiring veterans.

The Virginia Values Veterans organization is putting on the regional conference from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Inn at Virginia Tech. It's designed to help businesses learn how to recruit, train, and retain veterans. Organizers say if one-third of the 150,000 Virginia businesses hired one veteran, it would eliminate the unemployed veteran population and employers would get highly qualified workers.

"You know when you hire a veteran that they are well trained already, you know they are mission oriented, they are all about team work and frankly you know that today's veterans are stress tested already," said Sherwood Wilson, U.S. Navy veteran and vice president of administration at Virginia Tech. "So when you are hiring in today's world, a veteran has very little risk and great reward."

There are 106 organizations in the commonwealth certified to recruit veterans trough Virginia Values Veterans. Virginia Tech became the first public university in the state to do so, in February.
