New Salem Red Sox GM Has Big Plans for the Team

Posted: Updated:

A big announcement out of the Roanoke valley Tuesday welcomes the Salem Red Sox's new General Manager, Ryan Shelton. He was the former vice president of ticketing for the team and has been with the team since last April.

The team's seen a lot of empty seats at games lately but Shelton's got plans to change that.

If anyone understands those woes, it's Shelton. He says he is going to revamp the atmosphere based on what the fans want.

We talked to fans at Tuesday's game to find out exactly what they do want.

Turns out - it's more fans.

Long-time die-hard fan Julie Reed worked at the ballpark when it first opened. While there are many empty seats now, she says it hasn't always been that way.

"When we worked here when it first started, first several years the lines to the concession stands were enormous," Reed said. "It was pretty much always crowded."

While a short wait time for chili dogs is a plus for fans, the reaction we received from fans was that they unanimously wanted bigger crowds.

Shelton plans on delivering. He says one of their strategies is to have the Sox in the community more in the off season.

"We will be engaging the community much more in the off season, making sure we are a constant presence," Shelton said.

He says that will keep fans a constant presence in seats next season.

"Next year we really want to keep the fans entertained. We will provide great customer service and listen to feedback, and that will lead to more butts in seats."
