Blue Ridge Veterans Celebration Raising Money for Local Veterans

Posted: Updated:

The Blue Ridge Veterans Celebration 5K race and fun run raises money for different groups serving the thousands of veterans, active duty military members, and their families who live in southwest Virginia.

The $25 entry fee goes to local military organizations:

- Virginia Wounded Warrior Program, which makes sure veterans and their families have access to behavioral, health, and rehab services.

-Military Family Support Center, which serves as a "home base" to support soldiers in the area who don't live close to a base and need things like a food pantry.

Local veterans' organizations can apply for grants this year. Grants are awarded to organizations that work to improve the lives of veterans and their families.

Last year, the Blue Ridge Veterans Celebration raised about $15,000 for J. B. Kerns, a Marine who lost both legs and an arm in an IED blast. He ran last year in the race.

The race is Sunday, Sept. 8 at Wasena Park at 2 p.m. You can register online.
