The NTSB is now in charge of the investigation into the deadly plane crash at the Danville Municipal Airport.
The NTSB says the pilot was a student on a solo flight - and his instructor was watching from the ground.
Investigators are checking to see if the lights on top of the tower the plane hit, were working last night.
The airplane is expected to be removed Saturday.
UPDATE 11:30 P.M.
Virginia State police now say the plane's pilot died at the scene.
Investigators say the single-engine Piper Warrior aircraft was coming in for a landing at the airport when it made a sharp left and struck an ILS tower.
One wing was clipped and the plane crashed near the runway, then caught fire.
The plane was completely destroyed in the fire.
The NTSB and the FAA have been notified.

Officers were called to the scene at 7:53 p.m. Thursday.
Investigators believe the pilot was the only person on board. There is no word on injuries.
