Back-to-School Welcome Comes With Heavy Traffic for Salem Schools

Posted: Updated:

Interstate 81 in Montgomery county may be back open, but the detour caused major problems over the past two days.

Drivers in the Salem and Glenvar areas faced double the trouble in terms of traffic.

It's been a challenge for students and teachers to get to and from classes the past two days, with many drivers deciding to use 460 in front of the school to get around I-81.

Plus, a VDOT construction project to widen route 460 for two miles was already causing some congestion issues.

Glenvar High School student Levi Mullins started his senior year this week and calls the traffic "just chaotic."

"It's pretty congested from all the interstate traffic," Mullins says. "My brother and sister try to leave 10-15 minutes early to make sure we get to class on time."

Glenvar High School principal Sonya Cline says they've been understanding with late-comers.

"I just know it creates frustration everywhere and we try to be as reasonable as possible with people coming in late and whatnot with the issues out front."
