Verizon Communications and Vodafone are nearing completion on a major deal that would give the U-S telecom giant complete control of Verizon Wireless. The two are expected to announce a major deal worth 130 billion dollars today.

Today marks the 140th birthday of the town of Rocky Mount. The town is hosting a free outdoor concert at the downtown farmers market to celebrate. Gates open at 3:00, the concert begins at 4:30.

Commonwealth Catholic Charities will hold its Annual Labor of Love 5K and one mile walk this morning. Registration is from 7:30 to 9 at the Reserve Avenue Field in Roanoke. The run begins at 10.

Olive Garden restaurants nationwide will celebrate labor day by delivering and serving lunch to police, firefighters, and emergency room workers today. The lunch serves as a thank you for their service to the community.
