Vinton Replacing Old Generator Following 2012 Derecho

The town of Vinton is replacing a generator that is more than 30 years old. The town council voted in favor of buying a new permanent and mobile generator for pump stations around the town at a cost of $116,244.

You may remember during the derecho of 2012, some town of Vinton water customers were under a boil water advisory after losing power. Town manager Chris Lawrence estimates about 1,200 customers were affected.

The water ran out and customers had to rely on bottled water until a mobile generator could be brought in from Richmond.

Lawrence says the new equipment will enable them to be self-sufficient for 24-48 hours until additional help arrives.
