Wythe County woman pleads guilty to abandoning children

Posted: Updated:

A Wythe County woman pleads guilty to abandoning her children for four days last winter.

Heather Bennett, 32, was in court last week. She's charged with three counts of child abuse or neglect.

Wythe County Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney William Winters says there was some food left with the kids, but the amount was inadequate for that time period.

Although, Bennett's original sentence was nine years in jail, all but eight days were suspended.

Winters says sentencing guidelines called for probation only and no incarceration for these offenses and associated facts.

In court, Bennett claimed a defense that she had an arrangement with the father who lived next door, to watch the children.

Bennett is on probation for five years.

She's also scheduled to appear in court later this month for charges on manufacturing a controlled substance.
