Police: 2 homicides in Roanoke appear unrelated

UPDATE: Police identified the stabbing victim as Joseph Benson Redman, 30, of Roanoke.

Roanoke police say two people were killed early Saturday morning, but the homicides appear unrelated.

The following information comes from police: 

At approximately 4:22 a.m. a Roanoke police officer observed several individuals near the intersection of 9th Street and Tazewell Avenue. The officer made contact with the individuals and then observed a white male in the 800 block of Tazewell who appeared to be bleeding. The officer determined the male suffered a wound to the chest. The victim advised he had been stabbed. Roanoke Fire EMS transported the victim to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The case is under investigation. No arrests have been made. The victim is not being identified at this time pending notification of next of kin.

At approximately 4:35 a.m. the Roanoke Police Department responded to a shots fired call on the 2700 block of Centre Avenue. Officers discovered one male victim lying in the street suffering from a wound to the mid-section. The victim was later pronounced dead at the scene. The victim has been identified as Derek R. Price, age 41, of Roanoke. The case is under investigation. No arrests have been made.
