Gubernatorial candidates spar over King's Dominion law

Posted: Updated:

Reaction is continuing to pour in on Twitter and Facebook following Wednesday night's gubernatorial debate between Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Ken Cuccinelli.

The two tackled a number of issues at the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce including taxes, Medicaid expansion, and gay marriage.

While direct answers were at times hard to come by during the hour long debate, both candidates were very candid when talking about the so-called King's Dominion law, which requires K-12 schools to start after Labor Day.

"The tourism business is too important (to make a change)," McAuliffe said. "The change would cost us about $369 million."

"Children outrank tourism," Cuccinelli said in response. "There are changes we can make to take the pressure off of the pre-Labor Day start."

One final debate is scheduled between the two candidates for October 24.
