The Smith Mountain Lake YMCA is holding a fundraiser to help settle debt that came about because pledges that were made during construction fell through.
The silent and live auction event will be held at the SML facility Friday night starting at 6 p.m. and tickets are $20.
SML YMCA Director Andrea Fansler says the Y has raised $65,000 of its $300,000 goal, and that an anonymous donor will match the total amount raised by Oct. 15.
Fansler says that the fundraising will continue through the end of the year. She says if the facility doesn't raise enough money it will have to look at altering some of the programs it offers and the hours of operation.
"The YMCA actually uses $250,000 a year in financial aid scholarships," Fansler said. "We don't turn anyone away from the Y and that is why it is so important for people to understand that we need this to survive for the community."
