First Startup Weekend in Roanoke

The first Startup Weekend Roanoke starts Friday.

Startup leaders say this is a huge opportunity for people who have big ideas, but aren't sure if those ideas would translate to big business. This gives them a chance to pitch ideas in front of successful entrepreneurs in our community and get some much needed feedback.

Startup Weekend happens in 100 countries every year.

Leaders in Roanoke are happy to finally welcome it here, with Roanoke's own successful startup, Meridium, hosting.

It's described as 54-hour frenzy, where more than 70 people from not just our area, but D.C., Richmond, and North Carolina, will have 60 seconds to pitch a business idea and then create a business model.

"It's events like this that brings these folks together," says Eddie Amos with Meridium. "We got great ideas, great talent, and great higher education institutions in this area. This is a way for us to highlight and showcase that talent."

The winners will get free space at the Roanoke Business Lounge to work on the startup, free web hosting by Rackspace, and lots of other prizes to help their new business grow.
