Christiansburg Police investigates infant remains found

Posted: Updated:
CHRISTIANSBURG -

The Christiansburg police department was contacted by LewisGale Hospital Montgomery on September 27th regarding a female patient that allegedly denied that she recently gave birth, even though she showed signs that disputed that.

According to an affidavit, the woman went to the hospital complaining about fatigue and loss of blood. The surgeon told police that the bleeding was caused by a placenta that is found in a woman during the third trimester of pregnancy.

A search warrant was then obtained around 3:15 a.m. on Saturday for her home, on the 100 block of East Street.

Investigators found the decomposed remains of an infant wrapped in a bag and concealed in a closet inside the home.

The remains have been transported to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for further evaluation.

While the discovery is considered suspicious, it is unclear at this time whether foul play was involved.

Since no charges have been filed yet, we haven't released the woman's name.
