Iconic Downtown Roanoke Building Turns Into Residential & Commercial Space

Posted: Updated:

Uncovering bits of history each day, developer Faisal Khan says he never imagined what he would find when he decided to turn Crystal Tower, a former office space in downtown Roanoke, into commercial and residential space.

"The area we are standing in with checkered patterns, it survived and it's been extremely rewarding," Khan says.

He's discovered not just original flooring from the 1930s, but an original fountain, ceilings, and tile. He plans to keep the name from the 1930s hotel, Ponce De Leon.

"I love restoring old things and to be able to do it on this level is personally rewarding," Kahn says. "Why build something new and create something from scratch when we can preserve what we have?"

The goal for the project is to turn this space into 90 apartments, many of them one bedrooms. Khan also plan to add six to seven retail spaces and one restaurant.

Khan plans to keep all the original architecture. He even hopes to use Lick Run, the underground spring that goes through the building, as a source of some of the water for the property.

Leasing space is already available. Khan plans to open the doors by August 2014.
