Christiansburg Peppers Ferry Rd widening project

CHRISTIANSBURG, VA -

After 16 months of construction, drivers are getting tired of delays on Peppers Ferry Road. VDOT Spokeswoman, Jamie Smith, says the project will make travel in and out of Christiansburg a lot easier.

"The road will be widened, there will be extra lanes in both directions," says Smith. "Hopefully it will help alleviate some of the congestion and make it easier for people to travel through that area."

But while work continues on the project, congestion is something people in the area are having to live with on a daily basis. Businesses, like the Blackstone Grill and Inside Out Salon, say it can lead to major headaches for them and their customers.

"Around 4 p.m. Monday through Friday you'll see the backups out there," says Tony Dellorso, executive chef at the Blackstone Grill.

"We've seen a lot of backup, clients have been running late with all the congestion in the area," says Charmaine Edwards with the Inside Out Salon.

Smith says most of the road work is taking place Monday through Friday, while they try to avoid peak traffic times.

"They do close lanes in order to get some of the work done," says Smith. "They do that during the day, but they do it at off-peak hours."

The $24.5 million project is now over halfway complete. Businesses are doing their best to stay positive.

"Once its finished, I think it's going to be great," says Edwards. "It's definitely bringing a lot of customers past here that have never had to stop and actually look this way. We think it could be great for business."

"We still have our regulars that come in and want to spend time in the restaurant," says Dellorso. "But I'm just hoping it will be done soon."

VDOT plans to complete the project by Fall 2014.
