The Center for Advanced Engineering and Research is a hub for products of the future. CAER is the first building at the New London Business and Technology Center, and soon it'll have a new neighbor.
It's mostly just dirt for now, but a company called Simplimatic Automation is going to build a new manufacturing facility there. The 60,000 square foot investment will cost $4 million.
Bedford County's plan is to have more businesses like Simplimatic Automation call the region home. Some of the plan includes increasing marketing programs through the state level.
The county is still brainstorming ideas until the plan starts in July.
Traci Blido with the county's economic development office says Bedford County is attractive to businesses because of tax breaks and the low cost of living.
"We hope to attract high tech companies, advanced manufacturing firms both hourly and salaried and we want to attract any company that has great jobs," Blido says.
Leaders aren't forgetting about what they have now, too. They're working to keep the businesses here and help them grow. The county believes helping their existing businesses could attract more companies to buy the empty lots.
