WARNING: possible rabid animals near Franklin Co. shopping center

Posted: Updated:

Franklin County leaders are warning people about possible rabid animals in a few populated areas in Rocky Mount.

Brittney Perdue says she walked out of her family's business 'Franklin Outdoors' near Kroger in Rocky Mount and suddenly began fighting off a raccoon with yellow pus coming from its eyes.

"It was scary because I was just minding my own business and it came out of no where and jumped on me," Brittney Perdue says.

Perdue says the wild animal latched on to her leg and wouldn't let go. She eventually knocked it down and it ran away.

"It was kind of a burning sensation at first and I thought maybe it had just scratched me and when I got in and I was bleeding, then I realized it actually bit me," Perdue says.

Perdue says raccoons are usually nocturnal animals, which is why she's worried it had rabies because of it's strange behavior.

She's now periodically taking time from work to get expensive and painful rabies shot.

It's not just Perdue who says she's seen these animals that look like they have rabies, but several other employees in the shopping center say they've seen skunks who look sick too.

"There's a lot of concern there because rabies are 100% fatal," Captain Marvin Woods says.

Captain Marvin Woods with the Franklin County Public Safety Department says he's received several reports of employees from around the shopping center feeding feral cats.

"The people's heart is in the right place," Captain Woods says. "They are trying to feed these animals, but in turn it just creates a nightmare. In trying to feed the cat you're just spreading disease."

Captain Woods has set up a trap hoping to catch one of the rabid animals, but for now both him and Perdue are warning people to be careful.

If you see an animal like this you are asked to call the Franklin County Sheriff's Office: 540-483-3000, or Franklin County Public Safety 540-483-3091.
