Concerns with Dish Network protection plan fees

Posted: Updated:

When Matthew Repass, a Dish Network customer of more than 14 years, looked at his bill earlier this month, he was surprised to see a new charge.

"It said pro-rated protection plan, like I had called in and added it," says Repass.

To get their side of the story, WSLS called Dish Network to find out more about what this protection plan is.

"It's just like having an insurance plan, there's only so much we can do," says a worker with Dish Network Customer Service. "If they have a protection plan, it opens the doors so we can do more."

Dish says their first service comes free for three months, if customers don't cancel-- they start getting charged. It's something Repass says doesn't make sense in his case, since he's had Dish for years.

"They couldn't give me a good answer to why it was placed on my bill in the first place," says Repass.

While $7 doesn't seem like much, it can add up quickly. Paying the extra fee for just one year adds up to more than $80, and a two-year contract means $186. That's more than the average $95 a customer would pay if they do need a technician.

"We can remove it. If it was free, and rolled over to pay, then we can remove it no problem," says Dish.

We asked you to join the conversation on our Facebook page and have gotten a lot of responses. Many people say they've been just as surprised by these additional fees as Repass has.

"I will be looking at my bill a lot more carefully," he says.

Something many of our Facebook fans say they will be doing as well.
