Two Candidates Running for District 19

For the first time in more than half a century, Lacey Putney will not be returning to Richmond.

"When he announced he wasn't running I was more surprised than anyone else," says Democrat Lewis Medlin, who is running for District 19.

"Mr. Putney is a statesman and has been dedicated and committed and loyal to the residents of the commonwealth," says Republican Terry Austin, who is also running for District 19.

District 19 is a large area that stretches from Alleghany to Bedford counties, but the candidates say what the people want is the same: bringing better jobs and improving education.

"We really need to expand training in the high school and community college," Medlin says. "I think we're doing a real disservice to the students who are college bound because they don't have the skills to get out of college and I want to see if we can expand that."

"Traveling and campaigning the district I realize that economic development is an important issue in the district," Austin says.

This is Austin's first time running for the seat and Medlin's fourth. Both say they won't try to be the next Putney, but will do their best to serve the region if elected.
