Krispy Kreme has submitted an application to rezone a piece of property along Hershberger Road, where it says it plans to build a new store in Roanoke.
According to the application, the company wants to build the new store next to the K&W Cafeteria. They plan to demolish a small appliance store that currently sits in that space to make room for the building and an expanded parking lot.
The 2,886-square-foot building will have approximately 50 seats and a drive-thru. The location will also serve as a bakery, so the donuts can be made on-site.
"It goes without saying that the Roanoke market is in great need for a new Krispy Kreme restaurant since the fire destroyed the Melrose Ave. location," the application says. "Since that time, Krispy Kreme has been logistically moving products from its Winston-Salem headquarters up to the Roanoke market to serve kiosk locations in places such as grocery/convenience stores. To meet market demand for the Krispy Kreme product a new, freestanding restaurant with drive-thru is imperative."
Krispy Kreme is asking for a rezone because the current zoning on the property calls for the minimum lot size to be 1 acre.
