Holiday traffic dangers and accidents

Posted: Updated:

1-point-2 million Virginians are expected to travel over the Thanksgiving holiday.

To make things a little easier for drivers, VDOT has lifted lane closures on most interstates and other roads. The lane closures will be lifted until noon Monday, December 2nd.

For those drivers who plan to hit the road Wednesday night or Thursday - you should be extra careful.

According to Progressive Insurance, car accidents spike 17-% the Wednesday before Thanksgiving - between 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. Thursday.

There have already been several accidents in southwest Virginia.

Police say a mattress in the middle of interstate 581 caused two separate accidents involving a total of 6 cars.

The wrecks shut down at least one northbound lane - it has since reopened.

There was also a fatal accident in Bedford County.

Police say a car driving north on route 715 took a turn too fast, ran off the side of the road and slammed into a tree.

A passenger in the car, Evan Nichols, was pronounced dead at the scene - police say he was not wearing his seatbelt.

The driver, Durham Falabella was taken to the hospital for injuries he sustained in the crash.
