Hundreds of volunteers make Stellar One Drumstick Dash possible

With more than 15,000 runners and walkers expected to hit the pavement Thursday it takes almost an army of volunteers to make the largest 5k in Southwest Virginia happen.

In fact, 400 volunteers are helping with the Stellar One Drumstick Dash - which benefits the Rescue Mission Ministries.

Handing out packets days in advance, registering folks who want to take part, and host of other duties.

The volunteer coordinator says many families have made it a tradition to spend their holiday serving others.

"There are families that walk or run as a tradition. There are families that serve the Thanksgiving feast as is tradition and we always have a lot of repeats for those helping with the drumstick - you definitely a lot of people come back year after year," explained Leslie Littefield, Volunteer Coordinator.

On top of the race more than a hundred other volunteers are preparing the Thanksgiving feast the Rescue Mission will serve to those in need.
