Operation Turkey Drop kicked off its ninth year Thursday morning - at the Fellowship Community Church in Salem.
Volunteers took food donations to distribute Thanksgiving lunches to emergency services throughout the Roanoke Valley.
The event was started by a church member who had a daughter with a disability, and after spending several holidays in the ER they decided it would be a nice gesture to provide a thanksgiving lunch for those serving others - instead of spending time with family and friends.
Ken Nienke, a pastor at the Fellowship Community Church said "one of the things that we enjoy about it the most is that we have the opportunity to give back to them. When you walk into a fire station or an emergency room, then you have the opportunity to get a good feeling that we're able to give back to those that care for us and make a difference all year long in our lives."
Organizers say the event has grown every year, and this year they provided lunch to close to 700 people at over 30 different locations.
