You don't expect the sounds of sirens to wake you up on Thanksgiving morning and as the trucks pulled up in front of the Day family home, children came out to an unexpected surprise.
The early Christmas surprise was for 14-year-old Savannah Day and her sisters who will be at Cincinnati's Children's Hospital on the 25th. Day is scheduled to undergo brain surgery and her family will be by her side as she recovers for a couple of weeks there.
"I thought we were just gonna have it like a few days after or before when we got home," said Savannah.
"It was really special for them to still have even though it's still thanksgiving for them to wake up this morning and all of their friends and family here," says Michelle Day, Savannah's mother.
Emergency crews from Roanoke and Botetourt Counties helped out too.
"It's Thanksgiving but what reason to get out of our beds on our days off and do something like this?" says Adam Smith with Botetourt County Fire and EMS.
Not all the presents will be for the children there. After the sisters found out they'll have to be at the hospital on Christmas Day a few months ago, they decided to collect toys to give to other patients. Family and friends jumped in on the effort and bought toys for Savannah to take to give out at the hospital.
"It's overwhelming that so many people are trying to give toys to Savannah to further what the girls wanna do," says Michelle.
