Winter Storm Warning - FOX 21/27 WFXR Roanoke/WWCW Lynchburg News, Weather

Winter Storm Warning

Posted: Updated:

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for all of southwestern and central Virginia.

The advisory expires at midnight Monday for the Mountain Empire, 4 a.m. Monday for Southside and 9 a.m. Monday for the remainder of the area.

Areas of sleet and freezing rain are falling this morning with some snow in the Highlands.

As warm air aloft moves in this afternoon, freezing rain will be the primary thing we see continuing into Sunday night.

The highest amounts of ice are expected in the Highlands and along the Blue Ridge where a half inch of ice is possible.

Ice amounts around a quarter of an inch are expected elsewhere with slightly less in the south.

These ice amounts will create icy conditions on trees and power lines which will cause power outages.

Bridges, overpasses and some roadways will also become slick with travel discouraged Sunday into early Monday.

Temperatures will rise above freezing on Monday allowing ice to begin melting.
