Perhaps my favorite event of the year is this weekend at the Hotel Roanoke. The Square Society's Black and White Masquerade Ball starts at 8 tomorrow night and this will be the fourth year my lovely bride and I have attended. Also this year it's sponsored by your Fox 21/27 and that means it's kicked up a notch. They're opening up a casino where the guests play for fabulous prizes. That's in addition to the unbelievable food, cocktails, music and dancing and the bourbon and piano lounge. There may be a few tickets left, so check out squaresociety.org and I'll see you there.
Little kids are hardwired in their DNA to be obsessed with dinosaurs. The Science Museum of Western Virginia is offering a rare opportunity to see and touch actual dinosaur fossils and teeth - even a dinosaur egg - while learning about these incredible creatures in "Touched By Dinosaurs." The shows this weekend are sold out. Seating is limited to 80 people per show, so the Science Museum asks if you would call to confirm at 540-342-5721. There will be more shows scheduled in March.
So Chris Pine took over the role of Captain Kirk in the new Star Trek movies. Can he be Jack Ryan, too? Find out this weekend when "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" hits megaplexes everywhere. This time Jack, as a young covert CIA analyst, uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack. Co-stars include Keira Knightly, Kevin Costner, and Kenneth Branagh, who also directed the movie. "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" is rated PG-13.
