CHICAGO, Feb. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Fisher® Nuts announced today that the American Heart Association has certified nine of its products as heart-healthy. After completing the certification process, the Heart-Check mark will be appearing on select packages of Fisher® Nuts Pecans, Walnuts and Almonds signifying that the products meet the American Heart Association's requirements to be certified as a heart-healthy food.*
The Heart-Check Food Certification Program, which began in 1995, is one of the longest running established food certification programs. The American Heart Association® has a goal of improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent in the year 2020 through an emphasis on healthy eating and regular physical activity. The Heart-Check mark identifies for shoppers foods that can be the building blocks to a heart-healthy diet.
"This American Heart Association Heart-Check certification gives our consumers the confidence that they can make a heart-healthy choice by adding Fisher Nuts to any meal or recipe," said Howard Brandeisky, Senior Vice President, Global Marketing and Customer Solutions. "We're honored to be affiliated with such a long-standing, respected organization like the American Heart Association that raises awareness about the importance of heart health."
Several studies have reported on the nutritional value of nuts and that they contain higher amounts of mono- and poly- unsaturated (good) fats and lower amounts of saturated (bad) fats. Nuts can also be excellent sources of important vitamins and minerals, such as the antioxidant vitamin E.
"Numerous studies have suggested that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease," said food and nutrition expert Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD. "I always keep nuts in my kitchen cabinet since they are so easy to incorporate into meals and I love snacking on them, too."
*American Heart Association certified Fisher Nuts include Pecan Halves, Pecan Chips, Pecan Chopped, Walnut Halves & Pieces, Walnut Chips, Chopped Walnuts, Whole Natural Almonds, Sliced Almonds, and Slivered Almonds.
