It's easy to get caught up in all the numbers. The team calls it the "fan view." What people on the outside--looking in--to the Christiansburg Wrestling program think about, talk about. It's not what they care about, but they understand.  Saturday night in Salem, the euphoria of winning a state wrestling team championship washed over them.  It was an honest, emotional reaction to countless hours of salty sweat stinging into layers of mat burns. No matter that is was this program's 13th consecutive such title. Christiansburg doesn't view success that way. They want to improve, strive to be the best--on and off the mat.  On Saturday night Coy Ozias and teammate David Giantonio won individual state titles, but for them, it was about the culmination of hard work.  Ozias explains that while competitors may have been sizing them up all year, they were off taking on challenges on the national level. So the team title quest--13 straight--didn't really enter the picture until late.

Coach Daryl Weber explained that he knew the day after the state tournament last year that he was losing a ton of quality wrestlers, four-time champs, and that they would be young and have plenty of work ahead. He actually started to prepare them to remain positive despite the setbacks he knew were coming. A team title loss at the Big Orange and a Regional loss to Cave Spring would follow, but they never deviated from the plan of learning, improving--and preparing..for what was next.  In the long run, Christiansburg's wrestlers don't measure success by state titles--although they are proud of them--but rather the quality of person that leaves the program. Mission accomplished on both fronts, on Saturday night.
