Another weekend, another 5K, but this one is for the puppies. The Roanoke Valley SPCA Tail Chaser 5K and Dog Walk is tomorrow starting at Wasena Park. T-shirts for the humans and bandanas for the pups, but make sure your dog is social around other dogs and people. You also will need to have proof of rabies vaccination. The tag on the collar will do. But you don't even have to be a runner or walker. There will be plenty of pet-friendly activities, a bake sale, vendors, adoptions and even a flyball demonstration. It starts at 9 tomorrow morning, and you can get more info at RVSPCA.org.
This one is on my weekend to-do list: The Roanoke Valley Comicon is tomorrow at the Roanoke Civic Center. Plenty of comics, science fiction and fantasy memorabilia dealers, a costume contest, and Jeremy Ambler, who appeared on The Walking Dead, will be signing autographs. They typically do two of these a year. The Roanoke Valley Comicon spring edition gets underway at 10 tomorrow morning. Find them on Facebook or visit RoanokeValleyComicon.com.
If you're downtown Saturday around lunchtime, don't be thrown by anything you might see. The Marginal Arts festival has been going on all week. It's a celebration of alternative forms of artistic expression, from songwriting and dancing workshops to visual poetry and four-foot-tall rubber chickens. It wraps up with the Absurdist Parade and Street Carnival from noon until 3 around Community High School downtown. It features, among other oddities, square- and belly-dancing (possibly simultaneously), sugar-skull decorating, and a chance to breakdance and toss around a greased pickle. And people say there's nothing to do in Roanoke.
