The Roanoke Jaycees are bringing back Big Lick Beertopia, a celebration of craft beer. It kicks off at noon at the Salem Stadium with Rutledge on stage, and runs until 6 p.m., when Tobacco Apache wraps things up. This year they're showcasing over 45 breweries and will spotlight seasonal brews every hour. Proceeds are to benefit Camp VA Jaycee, Katie's Place, and Angels of Assisi, so come thirsty. The complete list of breweries and the schedule is up at BigLickBeertopia.org, and new this year: Cider Alley featuring at least 8 different hard ciders.
Another annual event that we love around here, the Woofstock Dog Festival, happens tomorrow at Roanoke's Elmwood Park. Live music, contests, animal rescues and more and it's all dog-friendly. They'll have demonstrations of stupid pet tricks, a doggy costume contest and even a dog and owner lookalike contest! Tickets are only five bucks, cash only at the gate. Kids under 12 and dogs are free. The 8th annual Woofstock Dog Festival kicks off tomorrow morning at 10. Make sure your pup is sociable around dogs and kids and keep that proof of rabies vaccination handy.
Tom Cruise has a new flick in theaters this weekend: "Edge of Tomorrow." Tom is an officer caught in a time-loop in a war with an alien race. Every time he gets killed, they hit the reset button and he learns a little bit more about how to defeat them. I will say that the TV trailers aren't doing this one justice. I saw the cinema trailer a couple of weeks ago and I'm on board. Imagine "Alien" meets "Groundhog Day." Except probably nothing like that. "Edge of Tomorrow" is rated PG-13.
And I got tipped off from our friends at The Roanoker Magazine that Bridgewater Marina at Smith Mountain Lake is celebrating a quarter century in business. They'll have water sports demos and tips, paddle boarding, water skiing, prizes and refreshments. A great day to get out on the lake tomorrow from 10-4 at Bridgewater Marina.
