Survey reveals discrepancy between Californians' perception of car theft and actual theft rates.

LAKEWOOD, Calif., Sept. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- A new survey conducted by Shift Insurance has revealed that while the rate of car thefts in California has fallen, most residents believe theft is on the rise.

Historical crime data from the Department of Justice demonstrates that California car thefts have dropped by 35 percent since 2003. The survey of 1,000 residents reveals that despite this drop, close to 75 percent of respondents believe car thefts have either increased or stayed the same within the last 10 years, while only 14 percent accurately estimated car thefts to have decreased significantly.

"Most people have little personal experience of car thefts and tend to pay more attention to the stories they hear in the news," says Shift Insurance spokesperson Raphael Locsin. Recent media coverage of the prison realignment program alongside regular media reports of crime in California may have left people with the perception that vehicle thefts are on the rise.

While crime rates have decreased significantly, California still tops the list of places in America where cars are most likely to be stolen. Eight of the 10 worst vehicle theft hot spots are in California State. Rankings are based on thefts per 100,000 population in the National Insurance Crime Bureau's 350-plus largest metropolitan areas. Top vehicle theft hot spots include Modesto, Fresno and Bakersfield.

"Despite the decrease in crime rates, California still has one of the highest rates of car theft in the country," says Locsin. "Auto insurance is just one way drivers can combat vehicle theft."
